Clean energy for a sustainable world

ECO-PROWINE

Prospects for ecological wine and EU implementation of innovative environmental technology lifecycle.

This project is co-financed by the European Union within the framework of the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme (CIP).

Approach:

Energy expended in the production of wine is huge. Total energy needs of the global industry for the production of wine (excluding the production of bottles and transport the finished product) can be calculated as equal to the amount of energy required, for example, for heating and hot water for 1.67 million households in the UK for an year .
The total carbon footprint of the global wine industry is 76.3 million tons CO2.
Solid and liquid waste, which is not treated properly, can have a serious impact on the environment. Wine is known for its large quantities of wastewater (0.5 to 14 liters for each liter of wine).

65% of world wine production in the southern countries, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and Greece, where climatic conditions require an increased need for energy in winemaking and careful use of water resources.

Furthermore, much of the production is concentrated in a few regions where viticulture is the largest and almost the only agricultural activity. In these regions, the wine industry has a huge environmental and economic impact.

The strategic idea is to promote this methodology among wine producers and thus to achieve broad commercial success. Tool for life cycle assessment Eco-PROWINE LCA - LCC (Life Cycle Assessment - Life Cycle Cost) can be used for various purposes such as environmental labeling, and identifying opportunities for improvement, comparison, etc.
